An inexorable trend in the use of global English is that fewer interactions now involve a native speaker. Proponents of teaching English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) suggest that the way English is taught and assessed should reflect the needs and aspirations of the ever-growing number of non-native speakers who use English to communicate with other nonnatives. Understanding how non-native speakers use English among themselves has now become a serious research area.
Different priorities in teaching English pronunciation, for example, have been defined. Teaching certain pronunciation features, such as the articulation of ‘th’ as an interdental fricative, appears to be a waste of time whereas other common pronunciation problems (such as simplifying consonant clusters) contribute to problems of understanding. Such an approach is allowing researchers to identify a ‘Lingua Franca Core’ (LFC) which provides guiding principles in creating syllabuses and assessment materials.
Unlike traditional ESL (English as Second Language), ELF focuses also on pragmatic strategies required in intercultural communication. The target model of English, within the ELF
framework, is not a native speaker but a fluent bilingual speaker, who retains a national identity in terms of accent, and who also has the special skills required to negotiate understanding with another non-native speaker. Research is also beginning to show how bad some native speakers are at using English for international communication. It may be that elements of an ELF syllabus could usefully be taught within a mother tongue curriculum.

QUESTÃO
According to the second and third paragraphs, in ELF contexts,
teaching the articulation of the interdental “th” has become utterly unimportant.
English clusters have been identified as the key difficulty for learners.
native-like manifestations of the language are not to be the main concern.
classroom material must be prepared in accordance with the “Lingua Franca Core”.
the “Lingua Franca Core” is restricted to pronunciation issues which eventually lead to miscomprehension.
📝 Resolução Comentada – Questão 48
A questão exige que o candidato integre informações do segundo e do terceiro parágrafos para compreender quais são as prioridades do English as a Lingua Franca (ELF).
O autor mostra que o objetivo do ELF não é reproduzir o comportamento linguístico de um falante nativo, mas desenvolver uma comunicação eficiente entre falantes de diferentes línguas maternas.
O trecho decisivo aparece no terceiro parágrafo:
"The target model of English, within the ELF framework, is not a native speaker but a fluent bilingual speaker..."
(A) ❌ teaching the articulation of the interdental "th" has become utterly unimportant.
Incorreta. O texto afirma apenas que ensinar esse aspecto específico appears to be a waste of time em determinados contextos de ELF. Não diz que ele se tornou totalmente irrelevante.
(B) ❌ English clusters have been identified as the key difficulty for learners.
Incorreta. Os grupos consonantais são apresentados apenas como um exemplo de dificuldade que pode comprometer a compreensão, e não como o principal problema dos aprendizes.
(C) ✅ native-like manifestations of the language are not to be the main concern.
Correta. O texto afirma explicitamente que o modelo-alvo do ELF não é o falante nativo, mas um usuário bilíngue competente. Logo, reproduzir manifestações típicas de nativos deixa de ser a principal preocupação do ensino.
(D) ❌ classroom material must be prepared in accordance with the "Lingua Franca Core".
Incorreta. O autor afirma que o Lingua Franca Core fornece princípios orientadores (guiding principles), mas não estabelece uma obrigação ("must").
(E) ❌ the "Lingua Franca Core" is restricted to pronunciation issues which eventually lead to miscomprehension.
Incorreta. Embora o segundo parágrafo trate da pronúncia, o terceiro amplia o conceito do ELF ao incluir estratégias pragmáticas e negociação de significados. Portanto, o LFC não se restringe apenas à pronúncia.
- O ELF prioriza a comunicação eficiente entre falantes não nativos.
- O modelo deixa de ser o falante nativo e passa a ser o bilíngue fluente.
- O objetivo principal é a inteligibilidade e a negociação de significado.
Chunk family:
- Native speaker (falante nativo)
- Fluent bilingual speaker (falante bilíngue fluente)
- Lingua Franca Core (Núcleo da Língua Franca)
- Pragmatic strategies (estratégias pragmáticas)
- Negotiate understanding (negociar compreensão)
- International communication (comunicação internacional)
